Shoki the Demon Queller - Hokkei Toyota


On thin Japanese paper, a drawing in sumi of Shoki subduing a demon. A powerful drawing, possibly a preliminary design for a surimono. From a collection of important drawings and paintings .
Hokkei (1780 - 1850) began his artistic career as a pupil of the Kano School of painting, studying under the master Yosen-in. Later he became a pupil of Hokusai and has been hailed by scholars as his best student. A vast number of Hokkei's prints are landscape scenes, emulating the bold images and unconventional perspectives attributed to Hokusai, yet lacking the color and compositional genius of his teacher. Hokkei's most notable artistic achievement, however, can be found among his surimono prints which are privately published woodblock prints used for greeting cards and often contain poetry
